Public Lecture
The Nobel laureate J. M. Coeztee Will Be Here Soon!

Waseda University and the organizing committee of Borderless Beckett are inviting Dr. J. M. Coetzee to be their special guest. He is the South African novelist (now residing in Australia) who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2003. His novels question the severe political reality of South Africa while adopting flamboyant textual strategies. The works explore crucial problems in a modern world at a crossroads of (post)modernism and (post)colonialism.

The topic of Dr.Coetzeefs dissertation (University of Texas, 1969) was  the early novels of Samuel Beckett, and he has published a number of essays on Beckett. He is also a patron of the Beckett International Foundation. The works include Waiting for the Barbarians (1980), Life and Times of Michael K (1983), Foe (1986), Age of Iron (1990),  The Master of Petersburg (1994), Disgrace (1999), Elizabeth Costello (2003) and Slow Man (2005).

A Closing Event

Tribute to Beckett: An Etude by Noh actors Inspired by Quad

Quad
, a piece for TV that Beckett produced in his later years, is an extraordinary play with 4 actors who merely shuffle rhythmically in a square space with a very strict rule regarding the route they take. Their route shows all possible combinations of the actors on the stage. What will happen when the Noh actors encounter this play? This is a most interesting and challenging event and will be the closing event for the symposium.  Details are below.

Date:  17:30 – 18:30, October 1 (Sun)
Venue: Ibuka Masaru Hall at Waseda University International Convention Centre
Cast: Kanji Shimizu, Takao Nishimura, Minoru Shibata, Kengo Tanimoto
         (Kanze style Shite-kata / Tessenkai)

Percussion: Masayoshi Tachibana
Director: Kenichi Kasai
